Map of Oahu, at left, shows The original extent of the O.R.&L., which went from Honolulu Harbor all the way around the Island to Kahuku. It was even possible to go on to Kahana Bay via the Koolau Railway. In the middle of the island was the Wahiawa branch which connected with more plantation railways and the U.S. Army Railway at Schofield Barracks. During WW-II a "Secret" Army railway (in Yellow) was extended to the North Shore coastline. Today, the section in Red is being restored for public rides by the Hawaiian Railway Society, Ewa Station. |

Unfortunately, many of Hawaii's classic steam engines and rolling stock Were sold off in the 1950's and 1960's, either to mainland US train collectors, or to foreign companies continued to run many of the engines for another 40 to 50 years. Ironically, in the past 10 years, a few have actually been purchased back as these companies in South America or Asia are finally phasing out their own plantation railways. |
